Saraki: Senate Inaugurates 12-Man Committee - Politics

OrderPaperToday – As the crisis of Bukola Saraki’s emergence as Senate President continues unabated, the Senate on Thursday, inaugurated a 12-man committee to seek amicable solutions that would bring about peace and stability in the upper chamber.

Although the Committee is officially charged with the responsibility of liaising with all senators towards settling differences or misunderstandings, ORDERPAPER.NG can report that the recommendations of the panel will go a long way in deciding the Saraki’s fate as Senate President.

Members of the committee drawn from all geopolitical zones of the country comprise Godswill Akpabio and Sen. James Manager (South South): Sani Yerima and Suleiman Hunkunyi (North West); Bukar Abba and Joshua Lidani (North East).

Others are Sam Egwu and Hope Uzodinma (South East); Barnabas Gemade and Abdullahi Adamu (North Central); and Monsurat Sumonu (the only female member) and Gbenga Ashafa (South West).

ORDERPAPER.NG reports that some members of the committee are not quite sympathetic to Saraki’s cause on account of his emergence as senate president and his continued trial for corruption at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). Indeed, a member of the Committee from the North Central zone has been mentioned in hushed tones among senators as a possible replacement for Saraki should he eventually go down.

However, while inaugurating the committee on Thursday, Leader of the Senate, Mohammed Ali-Ndume said that the committee had been given one week to conclude its report and submit to Senate at plenary.

While charging members of the committee to look at all the issues affecting the Senate and proffer solutions, he said: “You are charged with the responsibilities of addressing issues affecting the Senate: you were selected based on your integrity, respect and capacity to contribute in solving these issues. We are confident that you can sit down to address all the issues confronting the Senate within and outside the senate as it is now.

“Most of you know the challenges the senate is going through, I do not need to elaborate, so we have reposed our confidence in you to settle the issues. Every senator is confident that this committee will put to rest all the issues that we have and we believe that even those issues that we have with the public will be addressed.”

According to Ndume, members of the committee would decide among themselves who would be chairman as the Senate leadership did not appoint anyone to that position.

Recall that the Senate named the Committee members Wednesday after rising from a closed door session presided over Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as Saraki was in the dock at the CCT.
